What is FANFARE?

The FANFARE scale is our metric device for rating each stadium experience. It covers the following:

  • Food & Beverage
  • Atmosphere
  • Neighborhood
  • Fans
  • Access
  • Return on Investment
  • Extras

Each area is rated from 0 to 5 stars with 5 being the best. The overall composite score is the "FANFARE Score".

Food & Beverage   3/5

The food and beverage certainly did not exceed expectations. I had a hot dog, some kettle corn, and some lemonade. The food and beer sold at the game are relatively expensive, which is no surprise. Beer was sold in all varieties at $6.25 apiece. Food was sold at similar prices, as hot dogs went for four dollars and soda for an additional three.

Atmosphere   5/5

Upon walking in to the stadium, there is a large line of people waiting to get into the very large team store filled with anything and everything Denver Broncos, even those ugly vertical striped socks they wore earlier this season.

Nothing compares to taking your seat, where the beautiful rocky mountains provide a backdrop for the players and field. There is not a bad seat in the house unless you are sitting in the bitter cold, and the game experience is unbelievable.

Neighborhood   2/5

When you arrive to the stadium, fans upon fans are tailgating in the parking lot. There is a large tent in the middle of the lot that features televisions, games, and many other fun activities for fans to enjoy at a small cost before the game as well. The neighborhood is not great. This is what one South Dakota boy (namely, myself) would call the “ghetto.”

Fans   5/5

Denver fans are some of the greatest in all of professional sports. They are unlike any other fan base in that football is not just a game, it is a lifestyle. Denver Broncos football is much more than just players, coaches, and executives. The fans are just as much a part of the game as anyone, and they support this team through thick and thin. Even after a disappointing loss to the Raiders, there were still hundreds of fans waiting outside of the team store to represent the Broncos with pride. Denver fans are among the best any professional venue has to offer.

Access   5/5

Invesco Field at Mile High is one of the NFL’s most majestic stadiums. When travelling by it on I-25, the lights appear to be some kind of roller coaster, going up and down all the way around the field. When you get close enough, there is a dip in the stadium that reveals a section of the seats that is shaped like the beloved Denver Broncos logo. But getting there is only half the fun.

Return on Investment   4/5

This was a very large investment for my family, but the experience was totally worth it. Unfortunately, the Broncos lost. Had the Broncos been able to win, there would be no flaws.

Extras   4/5

The entertainment outside of the game was phenomenal. I got to shop in the enormous team store, had the opportunity to tailgate outside of the game, and I got to watch mascots beat up on little kids in a pickup game of football at halftime. Good times.

New Mile High, a great experience

While New (INVESCO Field) at Mile High Stadium isn't what the old one was, there are positive and negative dimensions in the comparison.

Sure, old Mile High was louder, but that was partly due to the shaky blend of four decades of architecture smushed into one place. There weren't nearly as many bathrooms, food and drink stands, or other conveniences either though.

New Mile High has three jumbotrons, all of which can play a TV signal, unlike at old Mile High. There are seats with backs thoughout the new stadium, whereas the old South Stands in original Mile High were all just benches.

The game is more comfortable to take in from a fans perspective in the New Mile High, but arguments can be made that the "true" fans have been priced out of attending games regularly and that that "wine and cheese crowd" fills New Mile High at a higher rate.

Still, it's always a great time in Denver while watching the Denver Broncos play a game in the fall or winter, and New Mile High Stadium is a big reason why.

(INVESCO Field at Mile High also hosted President Barack Obama's Democratic National Convention in September 2008.)
