Review by Jeff Summers, Stadium Journey Correspondent

FANFARE Score: 26

The Glendale Arena was built as a multi-purpose facility opening December 23, 2003. Its primary tenant is the NHL’s Phoenix Coyotes. Naming rights were granted in 2006 changing the name of the structure to the Jobing.com Arena.

The stadium is owned by the City of Glendale who operates the arena and leases space to the Coyotes. Besides hockey the structure also provides space for conventions and other events such as concerts. In 2004 the arena earned the distinction of being one of the best concert venues in the country.

Jobing.com Arena consists of two levels of seating. The entrance to the arena is at mid level meaning all lower deck seats are below the entrance altitude. Two short escalator rides up deposits the fans at the upper level. Between the two levels is a band of suites and hospitality areas for groups and big spenders.

The stands are angled to provide good seating angles without having to move left or right in your seats. This makes watching a game or a concert very relaxing and natural.

The seats are all padded even at the uppermost levels adding to the comfort. The rows are staggered further making it easy to see the floor even with someone tall sitting in front of you. This is especially true in the upper levels and makes those seats seem closer to the action.

In its hockey configuration the Jobing.com Arena seats 17,799 which is small by NHL standards and provides an intimate feel for the fans in attendance. Behind each section is a stand-up bar area where fans can watch the game while eating without having to balance the food on their laps.

This was a surprising feature but one that after you see it you wonder why all stadiums do not have this. The venue has very few structural elements that would block your view making the arena feel open and airy despite its smaller size.

The acoustics are very good making it a great venue for a sports event or a concert. With a full house this place really rocks giving the home team an advantage.

There is one Team Shop on the main concourse and satellite booths selling team merchandise throughout both the upper and lower levels. Perhaps the most popular place especially when the temperatures outside were warm and fans came ill-prepared for hockey temperatures.

There are several food venues throughout the arena offering anything from the standard hot dog (in this case named a Coyote Dog) to more elaborate food items. Most of the concessions offer some type of deal with an entrée, drink, and dessert at a lower cost. This is especially true on Saturdays when the team offers “Family Packs” that include game tickets and food items.

There is an abundance of parking all around the arena and most spots are free. There is valet parking and parking on the arena property that can be purchased at a premium. Traffic flows very well making it easy to get in and out.

Hanging above center ice is a state-of-the-art scoreboard that is capable of showing replays as well as displaying scores and game information. Surrounding the bottom of the second deck is a video ribbon board that is used to display league information and other visual effects.

Overall the Jobing.com Arena makes watching a hockey game or other event comfortable. The padded seats and unobstructed viewpoints are impressive. The fans that are there are loud and passionate. As the play-offs get closer the excitement will reach its peak making this one of the great arenas to watch a hockey game.

Food & Beverage: 4

You will find your typical sports venue foods throughout the stadium. The food offerings differ between the first and second level so be sure to check both if you are interested in something specific. The upper level features more standard sports venue foods while the lower level caters more to the upscale including specialty pizzas, Boars Head gourmet sandwiches, and a Hooters. Beer comes in a can ($4.50), bottle ($6.75), bomber ($10.25). The lower level also includes a Beers Around the World station featuring international flavors and brews.

Atmosphere: 4

The stadium has amazing sight lines. Entering the arena it is possible to look down onto the ice bringing the action immediately into view. There is literally not a bad seat in the house and the focus is always the game.

Neighborhood: 3

Located in Glendale Arizona, the arena is on the western outskirts of the valley away from many of the cultural activities of the Phoenix area. Besides the hockey arena there is he University of Phoenix Stadium, home of the Arizona Cardinals. Businesses are beginning to be built up around the area but it still feels somewhat isolated from the rest of the Phoenix area.

Fans: 3

The Phoenix Coyotes have struggled to retain fans. Many have questioned whether hockey can survive in the desert. With the team’s future in the valley uncertain, fans have taken a wait-and-see attitude. Those fans in attendance are knowledgeable and passionate for the team. Attendance is building and so is the excitement for this team.

Access: 4

There are literally thousands of parking spots available surrounding the stadium. Much of the parking is shared with the University of Phoenix Stadium and is free to the public making it the most economical sports venue in Glendale.

Return on Investment: 4

The Phoenix Coyotes have tickets priced at various levels. Besides the tickets there are several options that include food and beverage making it affordable to take the whole family. The concessions are economically priced and are a better value than some of the other stadiums in the area.

Etc: 4

The arena opens up into a courtyard with several night spots at West Gate. This gives the stadium almost a party atmosphere both before and after the game. There is adequate police presence so that things do not get out of hand yet remain fun and festive. The City of Glendale does a great job directing traffic before and after the games to make it easy to travel to and from the game. The team is young and exciting bringing a lot of excitement to a team which has struggled for several years.

Restaurant Reviews

Jimmy Buffett’s Margaritaville, 6751 N Sunset Blvd

Jimmy Buffett’s Margaritaville is a chain restaurant and is a must-go venue for any of the loyal “Parrot Heads” that follow Jimmy Buffett. The restaurant is located in Westgate which is adjacent to Jobbing.com Arena and the University of Phoenix.

The food selection is typical bar style foods with appetizers, grill items, and sandwiches. Most of the menu items represent the beach fare made famous in Jimmy Buffett’s music. While these may seem a little out of place in the Arizona desert, they are very good and at least while dining you feel like you are lounging around the beach.

Two of the specialty dishes that come highly recommended are the Coconut Shrimp and the Mahi Mahi Taco Platter. Both of these dishes were extremely good and were served with sides that made them a very filling meal.

The atmosphere is laid back which is what you would expect. The restaurant is decorated in island décor with an abundance of Hawaiian and tropical items. It is a great place to unwind after you team was beat. So take a trip to Margaritaville and forget all your cares in the world.

Saddle Ranch, 9375 West Coyote Blvd

Saddle Ranch is perhaps best known as the famous chop shop located on Sunset Strip in California. The company expanded opening a new location in Glendale Arizona in the Westgate City Center area surrounding Jobbing.com arena and the University of Phoenix Stadium.

The restaurant is best known for its country-western atmosphere and its famous steaks. The Saddle Ranch definitely fits into the old west view of Arizona and looks as though it has just escaped a western movie screen.

The Saddle Ranch continues the country motif offering music and a mechanical bull that gives patrons an opportunity to try their hand at bull riding or an entertainment venue where you can laugh at your inebriated friends who suddenly think they are cowboys.

Besides lunch and dinner, the Saddle Ranch also offers an outstanding brunch which includes an incredible French toast that must be tried. For pre and postgame, they offer several appetizers to get started. Of these, the specialty is the sweet potato fries. These are glazed sweet potatoes that are fried.

From an entrée perspective, the Saddle Ranch offers a large selection of salads and sandwiches for those on the go. The Steak sandwich is especially good topped with sautéed onions and mushrooms. If you get this I recommend going for the sweet potato casserole that is topped with candied pecans.

As you would expect, the Saddle Ranch has a great selection of steaks and pork chops. Of the steaks the best is perhaps the Porterhouse Steak that is dry aged to bring out the flavor. The steak comes with several choices for sides including the aforementioned sweet potato casserole.

For those with a sweet tooth, the Saddle Ranch has several desserts that will satisfy nearly everyone. The half baked chocolate chip cookie served with a scoop of ice cream and chocolate is a great selection as is the S’mores platter where you can roast your own marshmallows.

The Saddle Ranch is as much an entertainment venue as it is a restaurant. It offers you the opportunity to experience a little of the old west while being pampered with excellent food. It’s a great place to relax before or after a game.

By Paul Swaney, Stadium Journey Co-Founder

In the winter of 2009, I traveled to each Big Ten basketball arena in the span of one month. In many ways, this trip became the inspiration for Stadium Journey. Trips like this are not only a fantastic way to become more involved in the world of sports, it’s also a great way to see the country.

From this trip, I have several venues that I know I will return to (Indiana, Michigan State, Minnesota and Wisconsin) because they are so special. There are others that I feel I need to give a second chance (Illinois, and Purdue). And there are still others that I doubt I’ll return to again (Michigan, Ohio State, and Penn State). Finally there are those venues that were surprisingly better than what I had expected (Iowa and Northwestern).

All games that I saw were Big Ten conference games occurring in January or February, 2009. Without further ado, here is the official Stadium Journey Big Ten basketball arena rankings from worst to first:

11. Assembly Hall, Illinois

FANFARE Score: 14

What we liked: The Neighborhood- Jupiter’s- Definitely my favorite place on the trip. Good beer, amazing pizza, and plenty of pool tables.

What we didn’t like: The Access- It took us 37 minutes to get from our seat to the door. Thirty-seven minutes for a game that lasted less than 2 hours. And the narrow concourses with the drab concrete did not help matters.

10. Bryce Jordan Center, Penn State

FANFARE Score: 18

What we liked: The Access- One piece of good news is that Bryce Jordan is located near Beaver Stadium, meaning that parking is both plentiful and free. Free parking next to the stadium is always a good thing. Additionally, getting in and out is a breeze since games don’t tend to be highly attended.

What we didn’t like: The Fans- I found the fan experience to be highly disappointing. Not only are the students in a position where they could be a factor in the outcome of games, but the alumni and other fans are hardly noticeable. Like I said, this is clearly football country, and basketball is just a distraction until the fall.

9. Value City Arena at the Jerome Schottenstein Center, Ohio State

FANFARE Score: 20.5

What we liked: The Neighborhood- The immediate neighborhood surrounding Value City Arena provides plenty of choices within a half mile for food and drinks.

What we didn’t like: Return on Investment- Ohio State has the most expensive tickets in the Big Ten, both for basketball and football. What you get for your money is a big generic experience. The price isn’t going to break the bank, but unless it’s a big time game, then you’re probably paying too much.

8. Welsh-Ryan Arena, Northwestern

FANFARE Score: 21

What we liked: The first thing you need to know about Welsh-Ryan Arena is that it is not an arena. It’s a gym. I hope you understand that this distinction is a very good thing.

What we didn’t like: Food & Beverage- Make sure you get something before you come to Welsh-Ryan as there really isn’t anything available besides snacks and soda.

7. Crisler Arena, Michigan

FANFARE Score: 22

What we liked: The Neighborhood- This is where the experience really shines. There are great bars and restaurants in downtown Ann Arbor. The bad news is it’s a bit of a hike from Crisler, but once you make it you can settle in for a good time.

What we didn’t like: The Fans- The student section, known as the “Maize Rage” still has some work to do. They are positioned nicely down on the floor, but they need to find a way to sustain their energy throughout the game, and be as intimidating with lesser opponents as they are with rivals like Michigan State and Ohio State. They should be aided by a great pep band, and one of the best fight songs in sports.

6. Mackey Arena, Purdue

FANFARE Score: 22

What we liked: Return on Investment- With great sightlines throughout, and reasonable prices, a trip to Mackey is well worth the investment. Parking is free and prices at neighborhood restaurants and bars are a good value. They team has been in or near the top 10 in the country for the past few years, all the more reason to go to a game now.

What we didn’t like: Food & Beverage- Not much here, and certainly not anything to write home about. Hot dogs etc. can be found, and coca cola products are offered. I did appreciate that they had souvenir cups available, always an easy way to take home a keepsake.

5. Carver Hawkeye Arena, Iowa

FANFARE Score: 23

What we liked: The Atmosphere- The court is dug into the ground with 42 rows rising from courtside. The other unique feature of Carver Hawkeye is that there is no center court scoreboard. Instead, there are large scoreboards at each end. The result is a feeling of openness that is not found at any other Big Ten arena. It feels simple, and it feels right.

What we didn’t like: Food & Beverage- I didn’t find anything unique inside Carver Hawkeye. I did appreciate that I was able to bring home a souvenir cup. I had some pizza and some popcorn- nothing to write home about.

4. Williams Arena (a.k.a. “The Barn”), Minnesota

FANFARE Score: 25

What we liked: The Neighborhood- My last stop was the Kitty Cat Klub. A comfortable bar which is supposed to have an interesting music scene (I was there too early to verify it personally). I asked bartenders Tom and Ricky to invent a drink called the Golden Gopher in honor of the trip, and they delivered.

What we didn’t like: Food & Beverage- The food available at Williams Arena is better than most, but not anything that is going to blow you away. Traditional favorites like soft pretzels, nachos, and hot dogs can be found. Concession stands also includes offerings from familiar brands Subway and Papa John’s.

3. Breslin Center, Michigan State

FANFARE Score: 25

What we liked: The Fans- The wind was blowing pretty good, but since it was still early, I decided to take a lap around the facility. Even though it was cold, I was glad that I did. I ran into the statue of Magic Johnson on the other side of the building, and ended up at the gate for the student entrance. I was impressed with the crowd waiting to get in. These people were already into it- and we were still almost 2 hours from tip off. It was a very impressive group of students.

What we didn’t like: Return on Investment- As with most college basketball experiences, the price is well worth the cost to see a game. I was disappointed that there weren’t more souvenir shops with anything worth buying though.

2. Assembly Hall, Indiana

FANFARE Score: 27

What we liked: The Atmosphere- There is no doubt that Assembly Hall is just one of those magical venues that you need to see if you’re a true college basketball fan. The 17,456-seat arena regularly sells out, but the great thing is that it is a very large arena that still feels small.

What we didn’t like: The Neighborhood- Immediately surrounding the arena there isn’t much of a presence of bars or restaurants, but less than a mile away you can find a few options.

1. Kohl Center, Wisconsin

FANFARE Score: 30

What we liked: Return on Investment- A trip to Madison for a Wisconsin basketball game (or hockey for that matter) is well worth the trip. I paid $20 for my seat about 12 rows up in the student section. You’ll enjoy the neighborhood, the facility, the energy of the fans, and certainly the cheese curds.

What we didn’t like: Not much. The Kohl Center has the complete package, and is the must-see venue of the Big Ten basketball world!

Review by John Beatty, Stadium Journey Correspondent

Since 1998, the BankAtlantic Center has been the home of the Florida Panthers, the first having been the now demolished Miami Arena. The BAC was built out at the edge of the Everglades in Sunrise in order to attract fans from Broward and West Palm Beach counties. Sunrise is an outer suburb of Fort Lauderdale, home mostly to gated developments, strip malls and the Sawgrass Mills mall and outlet center.

While the Florida Panthers set the bar high early with the best ever record for an expansion team their first season and a Cinderella run to the Cup final in their third, the team has only been to the playoffs once since they moved to their current home, back in the 1999-2000 season. Nevertheless, the eternally optimistic hardcore fanbase return year after year in hopes that this is the year.

FANFARE Score: 19

Food & Beverage: 2

Most of the food at the BankAtlantic Center is subpar and overpriced. There are a number of food courts off the main concourse on the upper and lower bowl levels of the arena. The club level has one food court on the end. Everything sold at the food courts with the exception of beer is terrible. Sample items are inedible chicken fingers and cold fries for $10, Papa John’s personal pizza that’s been sitting under a heat lamp for $9 and undrinkable coffee for $3.

Beer sold is Bud, Bud Light and Heineken. There are better options in the arena than the food courts, but all are fairly expensive. Beer carts selling Molson are located throughout the lower level concourse, as is a vodka bar. Carts selling a selection of Irish beers are located on the lower and upper levels as are “Java Joint” coffee bars. The coffee at the carts is ridiculously expensive ($6 for hot chocolate, $7 for most espresso drinks) but far superior to the food court coffee. There is always a long line at the upper level coffee stand between periods.

For good food, visit the Everglades BBQ stand on the lower level. A good bet is the BBQ sandwich and cole slaw for $9, or the stir fry and sandwich stands by the bar above Pantherland.

There are also restaurants on the suite level open to all ticket holders. Both open an hour before game time. The Patron Club offers fancy soups, salads and sandwiches. An average ticket for a sandwich with drink is about $20. The Chairman’s Club offers a buffet for $35 before most home games. There is a third restaurant, the AvMed All-Star cafe, but it is only open to lower bowl ticket holders.

Atmosphere: 1

The atmosphere at the BankAtlantic Center leaves quite a bit to be desired. There is little in the building that would clue one into the fact that a hockey team plays here. There are a couple of player photos on the walls and the hockey store, Pantherland, is front and center at the main entrance.

Besides this, there are only a few banners in the ceiling to let everyone know there is a team here. There was a ramshackle “Den of Honor” on the lower concourse that was torn down to make way for more advertisements. After a large public outcry, the team announced a new, larger Den of Honor to be opened in March. The building is only 10 years old, but hasn’t been kept up well. The carpet is in dire need of replacement and is held together with gaffer tape.

The games are noisy affairs with loud music and movie clips played in between the ads during breaks in the action. In addition, a number of audience participation games are played during the breaks. All of the noise makes it hard to discuss the game at any time that it’s not actually being played, and game presentation staff prefer animations to replays.

Neighborhood: 3

While not in a downtown area, there are plenty of options for pre and post-game activities near the BankAtlantic Center. The Sawgrass Mills mall is across the street from the arena and offers a number of chain restaurants as well as a food court for before game meals. A lot of Canadiens jerseys are usually seen at the food court when the Habs are in town. Most of the mall is closed after games, but on Sunrise Boulevard, a few blocks away, there are two places for post-game food and drink, Friday’s and the Quarterdeck. Lester’s Diner on SW 136th Ave about a half mile south of the arena is a good place for a quiet, inexpensive post-game dinner.

If you have some time before game, there are a few better restaurants in nearby Weston, namely Lucille’s American Cafe and Stevie B’s Rib Cafe, both on Weston Road. Lucille’s offers comfort food and burgers. Stevie B’s offers burgers and barbecue. Both average around $20 a person. The strip mall housing Stevie B’s also is home to a dynamite local ice cream shop. There are also several fast food options on Sunrise Blvd for those in a hurry.

Fans: 3

The subject of fans can be a touchy one. There are a lot of transplants in South Florida, particularly from New York and Massachusetts, and a lot of Canadians spend winters here. Consequently, Rangers, Canadiens and Leafs games feel like home games for the visiting teams. However, the team has been here a number of years and as youth hockey becomes more popular and more transplants raise children here, it seems that every year more of the Rangers fans have kids sporting Panthers gear.

As for the local fans, the hardcore fans are pretty noisy, cheering and chanting throughout the games, but a lot of the casual fans are pretty quiet. When any team from the northeast or midwest visits, there are generally a lot of away jerseys and competing chants. Penguins, Flyers and Sabres games are particularly spirited affairs as are games against the cross-state rival Lightning.

South Florida is a fickle sports market, with only the Dolphins doing well most years. The Heat and Panthers get a lot of people at games when they’re winning and not many when they’re not. The Marlins can’t even seem to fill the building when they are winning. Since the Panthers haven’t been in the playoffs for eight seasons, attendance has been particularly bad, except when Canadian or New York teams are in town. Weeknight games can sometimes be particularly lacking in energy with all of the empty seats.

Access: 5

The BankAtlantic Center blows every other local arena out of the water when it comes to access. From the south, an exit from the Sawgrass Expressway drops drivers right behind the arena. This exit is also accessible as an entrance ramp back on the expressway from the parking lots behind gates 1 and 2. The Expressway exit north of the arena drops drivers a few blocks up Flamingo Road, and it’s a quick drive to the gates.

The arena is also easily reachable from surface streets. The parking lots are well-designed, emptying out fairly quickly after games. The parking fee is included in the ticket prices. This was instituted a few years ago to keep people from dodging the $5 parking fee by parking in the mall and walking across the street.

Return on Investment: 4

All things considered, the price is a reasonable for a night out. The ticket is one of the cheapest in the league (if not the cheapest). Tickets start at $15 ($10 + $5 parking) for upper bowl goal zone, with front row upper bowl seats at $55. Lower bowl seats start at $50 up to $225 for front row. Most games don’t sell out and discounts are almost always available. While it can be argued that the on-ice product isn’t particularly good, the reality is that it costs a good deal more to see a Heat game and they aren’t much better a team than the Panthers.

Etc: 1

The layout of the building is worth an extra point. The food courts off the upper and lower concourses are set back from the main concourse, with the bulk of the lines kept out of the thoroughfares. The sightlines are good from almost anywhere in the arena. I have sat all over the building and the only seats I would say to avoid are lower bowl goal zone seats on the end where the dancers set up, as it can be hard to get to and from your seat during the various dance numbers or break entertainments. Tall people should beware of row 3 in the upper bowl as there is a plexiglass barrier installed in front of the row that cuts into the leg room.

Review by JC De La Torre, Stadium Journey Correspondent

Nestled on scenic Channelside Drive in Downtown Tampa, the St. Pete Times Forum, formerly known as the Ice Palace, is a beautiful place to watch any event, but especially what the building was created for – hockey.

FANFARE Score: 30

Food & Beverage: 5

If you want a drink, the Forum is definitely your place. There are bars on the main and upper concourses, as well as in the club section.

There are plenty of restaurants within the building, including Outback Steakhouse, Ceviche Spanish Cuisine, Bar-B-Que and Mr. Empanada.

There’s also a sports bar at the arena, Shots, located underneath the main entrance of the building.

Atmosphere: 5

Lightning games used to be one of the more exciting sporting events you could do in the bay area. With the team’s ownership issues and fire sale of players, interest had waned a little bit in the franchise.

Now that the team is back in playoff contention, the Lightning fans have begun to come back in full force. On the night we attended, the Lightning had one of their best crowds of the season.

The Lightning also do a lot to entertain the fans before, during, and after the game. Before the game, the outer plaza area has many games, attractions, and of course, an outdoor tiki bar. Games include Guitar Hero, bean back toss, Goalie shot, and other assorted games.

On this night, the Stanley Cup itself was on display and fans had an opportunity to take pictures with the most storied trophy in sports.

During the game, the Lightning have a “pep group” that includes cheerleaders, games to win tickets and other prizes, and guys with shirt bazookas firing out t-shirts and toys into the crowd. The crowd is also entertained by videos from the massive scoreboard descending from the room of the Forum.

After the game, a rock concert by a local band entertained the crowd as they left for the night.

Neighborhood: 4

The St. Pete Times Forum is nestled on Channelside drive in downtown Tampa, just down the street from a major retail development – the Channelside district. Channelside district offers dozens of restaurants, clubs and other fun spots for fans to eat and be entertained. It also is where large cruise ships dock in Tampa Bay, making the view more interesting and scenic.

The Forum is also minutes from Ybor City, the nightclub hub for the Tampa Bay area.

In the immediate area, there are a few bars and restaurants. Andreychuk’s Grille (490 Channelside Dr), owned by Lightning hockey ambassador and former captain Dave Andreychuk is a quaint little establishment that offers food and entertainment. Located directly across the street from the Forum, its’ convenient location and quick service make it a perfect stop before or after a game.

Fans: 4

As with most groups of fans in the Tampa Bay market, you can typically expect many Northerners that have transplanted to the bay area supporting their own team. On this particular night, with the Atlanta Thrashers in town, the fans were definitely all pro-Lightning.

Tampa Bay Lightning fans were among the best and most enthusiastic in the league from 2004 to 2008, but after the team had a rough time with ownership squabbles and the team selling off some of the best players, attendance began to wane. The fans have slowly come back now that the team has a new set of stars and are once again in playoff contention.

The fans are well behaved, cheer at the appropriate times and jeer when needed. While hockey purists enjoy taking shots at fans in the South, the transient nature of the Tampa Bay community make this group as hockey-knowledgeable as any in the North.

Access: 3

Access to the Forum can sometimes be a challenge. While there’s plenty of lots to park, getting to the area can sometimes leave you in a large traffic jam if it is a well attended game.

There’s really no public transportation, with the exception of a trolley that takes you to and from the Forum and the Channelside district.

On most nights, you can weave through the downtown streets and get to where you need to go, but there are times when getting to the Forum can definitely be a pain.

Return on Investment: 5

Lightning ticket prices are among the cheapest in the NHL. For just $10, you can get an upper deck seat that has great sight lines.

Prices for beer and other amenities at the forum are industry standard and the excitement of the game, the environment and the crowd makes attending a game at the forum inexpensive and fun.

Etc: 4

The Lightning boasts one of the largest banners in hockey for their 2004 Stanley Cup championship. Banners also hang for division championships and World Championships for the Arena League Tampa Bay Storm.

Music is a mixture of classic hockey organ music, today’s hits, and rocking oldies.

Review by Paul Swaney, Stadium Journey Co-Founder

The name isn’t the only thing that feels big when you attend an Ohio State basketball game. Value City Arena at the Jerome Schottenstein Center accommodates 19,500 spectators for a hoops contest, giving it the feel of an NBA arena. It’s not that big is necessarily a bad attribute, but when it comes to college basketball, you certainly lose the energy and intimacy that can be found in smaller venues.

FANFARE Score: 20.5

Food & Beverage: 3.5

There are plenty of concession stands throughout, but nothing that you’ll find overly memorable. I thought the Donato’s pizza was better than most that you will find in an arena, and they also offer Johnsonville brats. Overall, you won’t be disappointed if you wait to eat at the game. They offer Coca-cola products for those fans looking to quench their thirst.

Atmosphere: 3

My biggest issue with Value City Arena is the size, and that it just doesn’t have that college feel. If the city of Columbus could ever get an NBA franchise this would be a great locale. As it stands as a college venue, it can be noisy and high energy.

I sat in the very highest row, and it is far away enough that I would pass up the opportunity to sit there again.

Neighborhood: 4

The immediate neighborhood surrounding Value City Arena provides plenty of choices within a half mile for food and drinks. Senor Buckeyes is a divey sort of campus bar. We had a couple of drinks at the bar, and the bartender, Ronica Gesling (she asked that I publish her name) was good enough to invent a drink for us. She called it “The Undefeated,” and it contained Malibu rum, Captain Morgan, Grenadine, Pineapple juice, and a splash of 151. She also told us that the previous owner’s grandfather was hit by a car by Richard Nixon’s son. I can’t verify the authenticity of this story, but it was as interesting as the drink.

Varsity Club is a popular choice before and after games and is very close by, so get there early if you want to actually sit down. We stopped by after the game, and it just felt crowded and filled with generic beers. It’s probably not the spot for you if you’re wearing the visiting team’s colors. There’s also Bernie’s, a true dive bar, where you can grab a beer at the bar where Jeffrey Dahmer was once a regular (if that sort of thing appeals to you).

Fans: 3

It is clear that football is king when you’re in Columbus. Even when the team is doing well, you don’t feel the electricity and anticipation found at other college venues (like in East Lansing or Bloomington). That disclaimer aside, Buckeye fans do a good job of filling up one of the largest arenas in college basketball, and offer expected support when times are good. I guess “average” is the word that comes to mind when I try to describe these fans- they won’t do anything that is surprising either in a good or bad way.

Access: 4

There are plenty of restrooms and they are all clean. Concourses are wide and easy to navigate. Parking is ample, and you can find free street parking if you’re willing to walk a few blocks. Overall, you’ll be pleased at how easy it is to get around when you go to an Ohio State basketball game.

Return on Investment: 2

Ohio State has the most expensive tickets in the Big Ten, both for basketball and football. What you get for your money is a big generic experience. The price isn’t going to break the bank, but unless it’s a big time game, then you’re probably paying too much.

Etc: 1

For as much as this is a football school, it is also a basketball program which has been to 10 Final Fours, and won the NCAA Championship in 1960. That kind of history is worth an extra point in my book.

Review by Dan Seward, Stadium Journey Co-Founder

Situated near Boston’s historic North End, TD Garden is home to both the Celtics and the Bruins. The venue itself stands in stark contrast to the City of Boston’s other sports temple, Fenway Park. The Garden feels brand new, indoors, and there’s not a bad sightline to be had. However, the Bruins are sort of the neglected stepchild of the Boston sports universe – the only major team in the area without a title in the 2000’s (in fact, they haven’t won it all since 1972) – and while Bruins fans are still fairly hardy, the experience suffers a bit.

FANFARE Score: 23

Food & Beverage: 3

TD Garden doesn’t really offer anything noteworthy in the way of food. Your typical staples abound – hot dogs, sausage, popcorn, ice cream, nachos. Lots of beer. It’s all average stadium pricing, although premium beers like Sam Adams will cost $8. We noted an interesting counter where they sold premium hard liquors and mixed drinks, which seemed odd, but they were doing a brisk business. There are some concourse bars on the premises which add a nice touch for loiterers, and an amusing Kosher vending machine that’s open 24/6.

Atmosphere: 3

To be fair, we attended a mid-season game against the hapless Leafs, but when the first puck dropped, a large number of seats were empty. Many spectators straggled in late. You have to give credit to the management, which does its best to get the crowd riled up with frequent crowd shots displayed on the jumbotron, and plenty of giveaways. They threw “burrito-wrapped” t-shirts into the crowd, had a seat-upgrade contest, and gave away some Bruins Irish-style caps to start the night, which a number of patrons wore throughout the game.

Don Cherry, the famous Bruins coach, was in attendance and the crowd cheered him thoroughly. However, things only really got buzzing when a pair of 1st period fights went down on the ice – without the fights, the atmosphere wasn’t anything to write home about.

Neighborhood: 4

The immediate area right around the Garden is actually pretty lousy. There are perhaps a dozen crowded sports bars serving bad food and overpriced beer. We hit the Grand Canal, a marginally nicer bar a couple blocks from the Garden, and had dinner. The food was average and the beer wasn’t horribly overpriced, which means we were doing pretty well for ourselves.

Halftime Pizza, right across the street from the Garden, is hugely popular before games with greasy slices and plenty of cheap draft beer. Slices are expensive at just under $3 per, but not unmanageable. Just be prepared to wait in line if you show up before a game.

As with Fenway, Boston’s compactness actually helps make having a pre- or post-game good time fairly easy. With the Garden, the North End – full of delicious but overpriced Italian food – is a 5-10 minute walk away. If you don’t mind walking a little further, there’s plenty more to see, do, and eat within a 30 minute walk.

Fans: 3

We had balcony seats and were surrounded by exactly what you might expect – drunken goofballs. This has its ups and downs. It’s amusing, but people can be pretty stupid. At one point a few balcony sections broke into a rousing chant of U-S-A! U-S-A!, apparently to mock the visiting Canadian team. They didn’t realize, or didn’t care that there were only 2 Americans actually on the ice, playing hockey at that point in time. At one point a chubby kid on the jumbotron won a personal pizza, and a crusty old jerk sitting next to me started cursing at him and mocking his fatness. Never mind that there was another chubby 10 year-old sitting right in front of him.

Aside from the face-palm-inducing nationalism and general lack of civility, most fans in attendance did what they could to cheer on the Bruins. They got riled up for fights and close shots, and made noise when prompted. You’ll get more die-hard fans at Bruins games than at Celtics games on a typical night, but you’ll get fewer fans overall and they might seem slightly less invested in the outcome.

Access: 3

The Garden sits right on top of North Station, a transportation hub with access to the Green and Orange T lines and a few commuter rail lines. This makes it pretty easy to access for most Bostonians. Be careful if you park near the Lechmere stop on the end of the green line – you might have to wait up to 30-40 minutes to catch a train out after the game. Regarding driving: Although the Garden is just off I-93, it can be pretty tough to drive here due to traffic. While parking may be slightly cheaper than the Fenway area, the going rate was still around $25.

During intermissions between periods, the concourse is absolutely flooded with fans trying to grab a bite to eat or use the restrooms. The men’s room sees some pretty hefty lines and navigating the vending areas can be hazardous to your health. If you can duck out early in the first period to get your food you’ll save yourself hassle and time.

Return on Investment: 3

As with any sports event in Boston, it’s expensive to go to any game at the Garden. Balcony tickets have a face value of about $30, but you’ll be lucky to score seats for under $40 via StubHub or other ticket resellers. After a drink and a snack you can’t really experience a Bruins game for under $55-60 per person.

However, the Garden delivers a very good spectator experience. There’s a lot going on for the entire game and there are really no bad sightlines at all. The seating is very steep but they’ve done a great job with the construction and you can see all the action no matter where you park your butt. It’s easy to have a good time here, but you just have to pay a lot to do it.

Etc: 4

Some bonus points are deserved for all the Celtics and Bruins (mostly Celtics) banners hanging from the rafters. Some are also deserved for the preponderance of giveaways. Bruins games deserve an extra point for the awesome number of people wearing bear suits or bear hats, and general preponderance of bear iconography. The celebrating bear on the jumbotron after a B’s win is icing on the cake.

It’s clear when you arrive at the Bryce Jordan Center that you are in football country. I like that the Nittany Lions have created an opportunity for the fans to be basketball fans. Similar to Michigan State, the students are center court, but are still trying to find their sustainability. Success can certainly breed that sort of fanaticism that makes a place special.

In the meantime, parking is close, free, and plentiful. I would like to see a seating upgrade under one basket where they offer stackable chairs rather than permanent seats. You get the feeling that this is a program entering its teenage years, and I look forward to seeing them mature to adulthood.

FANFARE Score: 18

Food & Beverage: 3

There are plenty of concession stands inside the Bryce Jordan Center, so you should be able to find something to nibble on. Burgers, chicken fingers, pizza, and ice cream are all good choices. You won’t find anything that will blow you away, but you don’t have to leave hungry.

Atmosphere: 2

The venue feels big, and the fans have trouble filling it up. With the team not delivering the excitement to make up for the lack of energy, spectators are left feeling somewhat empty from the experience. The University has done a good job of placing the student section down near the floor, so there is the potential for this to turn into a true home team advantage.

Because Bryce Jordan is meant to host music events as much as basketball, it has an elongated seating structure. The result is stackable chairs at the ends for uncomfortable seating, as well as a feeling that the arena is not as intimate as it could be if it were a basketball only venue.

Neighborhood: 3

It was difficult to judge the town as many stores, restaurants, and bars were closed since it was a Sunday afternoon. I found one bar that I really loved- Zeno’s. Any bar that you have to take the stairs below street level is usually a good thing, and although the bartenders seemed apathetic to non-regulars (tourists like myself), the beer selection makes up for any perceived slight.

I can also recommend Phyrst, which is a bar with some character. They offer live music, and a good drink selection.

Fans: 2

I found the fan experience to be highly disappointing. Not only are the students in a position where they could be a factor in the outcome of games, but the alumni and other fans are hardly noticeable. Like I said, this is clearly football country, and basketball is just a distraction until the fall.

Access: 5

One piece of good news is that Bryce Jordan is located near Beaver Stadium, meaning that parking is both plentiful and free. Free parking next to the stadium is always a good thing. Additionally, getting in and out is a breeze since games don’t tend to be highly attended.

Restrooms are also easily accessed, and the stadium in general is easy to get around.

Return on Investment: 2

Games aren’t overly expensive, and parking is free, so if you’re just a college basketball junkie, and you live nearby, then this may be a good option. For me, this just wasn’t worth the time and cost it took to travel there, and I can’t recommend making the trip to the casual fan.

Etc: 1

When I attended in February 2009, the Phillies’ World Series trophy was in the house, as was the Phillie Phanatic. That piece of good fortune was certainly worth an extra point in my book.

Review by John McCurdy, Stadium Journey Correspondent

When they blew up the old Omni Coliseum in 1997, my young self (just awakened to the beauty of basketball and having attended my first few pro games at this place) was obligatorily sad to see it go. The interim years before we got our new digs, when our NBA affiliate was housed between the Georgia Dome and Alexander Memorial Coliseum, were painful as a team that was actually playing on the pro level (not a given in our town), but did not have facilities to match.

If only the Atlanta community had known what was to come in 1999: An 18,000-plus-capacity palace for both basketball and hockey. But more on the latter sport in another review; this is all about Philips Arena as the Highlight Factory, home of the Atlanta Hawks.

FANFARE Score: 25

Food & Beverage: 4

Healthy options you won’t find, but there’s certainly no shortage of appetizing ones. Sure, on the upper concourse you can find all the regulars like pretzels, popcorn, hot dogs and peanuts, but Hawk Walk is where it’s at. The burger-and-fry combo of course bucks into the double-digit price range, but it darn near tastes that good.

Other options along this stretch, described as an “indoor street,” include the Moe’s-style burrito, pizza, barbecue and a decent variety of other grilled sandwiches. Nothing’s below $8, but you didn’t come to the game expecting to save money, now did you?

The club level’s got even more options, including a tiny outlet of the Atlanta Fish Market, but those less-snobbish need not feel as though they’re left out. You can always hit up the Headlines Grill, basically a full-service restaurant, if you want to be treated like royalty…and miss part of the game.

Beer is obtained for a similar price as the food (domestics starting at $8.25), but the size is decent and a bump up to import only costs a dollar more. Please do not go for a cocktail at $9.50, though.

Atmosphere: 4

Ask about the atmosphere of a Hawks game four years ago and the response would have been a sarcastic laugh, but now we’ve got it going on. An important step away from the cartoony ‘90s branding has been taken, and the city has embraced their squad being portrayed as a modern and urban but classy bunch.

The “Highlight Factory” idea is carried over in every bit of marketing you see, and the graphics and pregame presentation fit in well for the ATL. The drumline is only a little dopey, but the spotlights and pyrotechnics of player intros are actually right-on for this on-the-come-up bunch.

This isn’t that overblown theater lighting they’ve got out in L.A., but there is a sense of drama to the way the court looks from the stands. It helps that Josh “J-Smooove” Smith lays down a dramatic dunk and/or block here and there.

Neighborhood: 4

The CNN Center is literally attached to Philips; as in, one of three entrances to the Arena is actually directly from the food court. Which is perfect for people who like to save a buck or two and want to have a lot of brand-name fast-food options rather than get stuff inside. Here you can grab Wendy’s, Taco Bell, Arby’s…the works.

Then, actually still in the same complex (though no longer available in contiguous indoor walking space, requiring a 15-second trip outside) is McCormick & Schmick’s. Sure, it’s a chain, but the variety is pretty impressive, and the quality is kept high from the lower end fish-and-chips to the tuna steaks and crab/lobster options. Expect to pay around $20 for your entrée, obviously depending on what you order, and then some more for a bottle off the extensive wine list.

There’s also a Ruth’s Chris within a block-and-a-half if you prefer the turf side of things. Yes, another chain, but being so close to Centennial Olympic Park, the Georgia World Congress Center and the Embassy Suites ought to create at least a quasi-unique experience. Get some high-quality beef and a red to match, just don’t blame me when your pocketbook weeps.

Fans: 4

Just like “Atmosphere,” this is a category that has undergone massive improvement in the past few years. I tell you, I was the loneliest man in the state as a die-hard in 2005; all it took was some young, exciting guys and a few wins under our belt, though.

Suddenly, the Hawks are the en vogue team around here. The Braves will always have a following, people will be rabid about the Falcons when they’re good, and there are some hockey nuts even this far South, but ask a person between the ages of 16 and 35 who the “cool” club is and where a hot date’s at and the answer will likely have to do with the roundball team.

Maybe it’s just our modicum of recent success, but people seem to know the team, too. Smith being a native son is a big boost, but knowledge of guys beyond big-namers Joe Johnson and Mike Bibby is common and fairly deep. You might even find someone with an opinion on what we need to add to the roster to take the next step!

You will notice a distinctly younger crowd here, as I alluded to previously. Not sure if it’s the roster, the presentation or just the sport itself that’s attracting the teens and young professionals, but it’s not necessarily a bad thing.

Access: 3

This is downtown Atlanta, which was meant to be traversed not by car but by…

OK, getting from place to place was clearly not a consideration when this city was mapped out.

I-20 and 75/85 meet not five blocks away, which could be a good or a bad thing, depending on whether you’re coming in or leaving. Coming south, I’d get on/off at Spring St. or maybe Piedmont Ave. and find either a surface lot along Marietta St. or pay for a CNN or Centennial deck. The price isn’t going to be great, but remember what I said before in the Food & Bev section?

On the east-west approach, you can get off at, you guessed it, Spring, or hook it around and actually get on 75/85 to get to MLK Jr. Dr. Along this route you’re sure to find plenty of surface lots, but if you skip them you’ll still get dumped out next to the decks.

Or bypass all that garbage by riding MARTA. You know, they say it’s “smarta.”

Inside, infrastructure takes a drastic turn for the better. It should be pretty clear from your ticket if you’re heading up or staying on the first level, and there are bathrooms not 30 steps apart most of the way around.

Return on Investment: 4

I’m not that old, but I’m old enough to remember when tickets to a pro game weren’t this much. I guess I need to consider the times, though.

It’s just unfortunate that at Philips, the price point you’d want to get a decent lower-level ticket for ($50-65) actually nets you something worse than the upper sections: under an overhang that narrows your view of the court beyond the normal TV screen.

I’d say the best angle is to either go cheap up high and fudge it by moving around or just go ahead and lay down $90-plus for serious seats. The middle-of-the-road options simply are not worth it.

You can get some really good views once you break triple digits; in my mind, it’s not a bad plan at all to go ahead and fork that over and go cheap in every other regard (eat fast food beforehand in the CNN Center and ride MARTA).

Etc.: 2

One point here goes to the façade out front. Yep, it says “ATLANTA.” Eat it, everybody else.

The other is for Harry the Hawk, our faithful mascot. No, he is not as well-known as that goofy gorilla out in Phoenix (just how is he a “Sun”?) or the now-extinct sasquatch from Seattle (totally not a “Sonic”), but he should be. The way the lower part of his beak just dangles, wobbles and wags willy-nilly as he performs his antics; the constantly furrowed brow that gives him a completely inappropriate sense of intensity; and his incredible stanky leg are truly one-of-a-kind.

FANFARE Score: 32

Bridgestone Arena is a multi-use facility that is home to the Nashville Predators, and is located in the heart of downtown Nashville on Broadway at Fifth Avenue. The arena was completed in 1996. The Predators began play in the arena in 1998, their inaugural season.

The arena is versatile in its configuration, with a seating capacity of 17,113 for hockey and 20, 000 for concerts and basketball. Additionally, the arena has a 5,145 seat Music Theater that provides an intimate venue for plays and smaller concerts. The arena also boasts an acoustically designed rehearsal hall below the main arena level where touring acts can perform a full concert rehearsal. The arena was designed with excellent acoustics on the main level, and the arena has been designed in such a way as to bring the upper level seats as close to the main floor as possible without compromising comfort or safety. Sight lines are good at all levels.

In addition to hockey, the arena hosts numerous concerts and events throughout the year, from top country and rock acts to the Ringling Brothers Circus and various Country Music Association events. The arena has also been home to the NCAA Men’s Southeast Region first round games on five different occasions as well as hosting the conference tournaments in basketball for both the SEC and Ohio Valley Conference men and women.

Visitors to the arena enter off Broadway or Demonbreun St. and step into the main concourse. The wide concourse allows for ease of movement around the main level of the arena, and features a main pro shop and several smaller pro shops that sell Predator merchandise. There are numerous concession stands around the arena, with the fare typical of most arenas such as hamburgers, subs, hot dogs, pizza, and chicken fingers. The main concourse has numerous kiosks that vend a limited number of domestic beers as well as two full service bars that offer domestic beer, several imports, wine, and mixed drinks. Prices are not out of the ordinary for food, ranging from $4-6 for most items. A 24 oz. domestic beer is $8.50. The same amenities are also located on the upper level of the arena.

The arena also offers 72 private suites that include a private restroom in each; a 42 “ flat panel television; access to the Suite Level Club for premium dining; and concierge service, to name a few of the amenities. There is an all inclusive “Fan Zone” in the attack twice end of the arena that provides the ticket holder with a lower bowl seat, a fully catered buffet with carving station, and unlimited soft drinks, wine, and domestic beer.

Bridgestone Arena is designed to provide a great entertainment venue, both from a spectator’s perspective and from the total fan experience, and it exceeds expectations on both counts.

As mentioned, the arena is located in the heart of downtown at 5th Ave. and Broadway. This is a prime spot for both tourists and locals to come for good music and nightlife. Diagonally across the street from the arena, at 422 Broadway, is Tootsie’s Orchid Lounge, a world renowned venue for country music and the place from which many stars, such as Kris Kristofferson, Patsy Cline, and Waylon Jennings got their start. You don’t go to Tootsie’s for the food, you go for the music, the cold beer, and the history. This is a must see spot for first timers to Nashville, and it is not uncommon to see members of visiting hockey teams in Tootsie’s the night before a game.

Tootsie's Orchid Lounge

At the other end of the spectrum is the Palm Restaurant, located across the street from the arena at 140 Fifth Ave. The Palm is part of the national chain of high end steak houses, and it is not uncommon to run into coaches from the Predators as well as the visiting team in the Palm. The food at the Palm is excellent, and their specialty is steak and exceptional customer service. Expect to spend $30-50 per diner on the meal, depending on the entrée selected. All other menu items are a la carte, and portions are usually enough for two people. Desserts are exceptional, and there is an extensive selection of wines and a full bar. The size of the tab at the Palm can go up rapidly depending on the amount of wine consumed with dinner, but in moderation, it is not unreasonable.

The Palm

Food and Beverage: 4

Standard arena/stadium fare, but good quality. Portions are reasonable for the price, and the variety offered is very good. The Club Level Suites offer very high quality food and the All Inclusive Zone is the place for big appetites; both are premium seating areas and not available to most fans. The full bars on the concourses are a nice touch with the wine and cocktail offerings.

Atmosphere: 4

The arena is built with the user in mind. Sight lines are good and fans, even in the upper levels, feel close to the action because of the way the arena was constructed. Ingress and egress is efficient. The newness of the arena precludes any historical significance of the facility; however, the amenities that are offered make this arena very fan friendly. There are numerous menu options, ample restroom facilities, and a band stage for live performances in the arena during each intermission of a hockey game.

Bridgestone Arena has been nominated as the 2009 Arena of the Year by Pollstar Magazine.

Neighborhood: 5

The arena sits in the heart of a historical entertainment district in downtown Nashville. This area of Nashville includes some outstanding entertainment venues, classic honkytonks, and high end dining such as Morton’s and the Palm. Pre and post game activity in the area around the arena are part of the experience of going to a Predators game. Also within one block of the facility is the Country Music Hall of Fame and the Schemmerhorn Symphony Hall, which has been recognized as one of the best symphony/concert halls in the world.

Sommet Center & Country Music Hall of Fame

Fans: 5

The Nashville fans are known for making Bridgestone Arena one of the loudest arenas in the NHL. The atmosphere at a Predators game is often likened to that of a college hockey environment, with lots of chants and cheers going on during the game. Hockey is still a new sport to the area, but the Predators have sunk deep roots into the community and the fan base is knowledgeable and growing.

Access: 4

This is a downtown arena, and the access is by surface street only. Interstate access will get a fan to within approximately two miles of the facility. The main street on which the arena is located is Broadway, and it is a seven lane street that provides east/west access to and from the arena. Other surface streets provide ingress and egress, most are two lanes. Traffic control around the arena is very good. Taxi and bus service are available.

Parking is in lots close by the arena and is ample. Prices increase as proximity increases to the arena, but most lots with a block charge $10.00 to park. There is a garage in the arena with limited spaces that charges $25.00 per game.

Inside the arena, there are ample restroom facilities as well as several specially designated family and handicapped accessible restrooms. Each carries the radio broadcast of the game.

Return on Investment: 5

The fan experience at a Predators game is exceptional. The facility adds to the experience by being very comfortable, acoustically outstanding, and providing a great viewing experience. The Predators have one of the lowest ticket costs in the NHL and the fan experience is maximized at this venue.

Etc: 5

I have had the opportunity to visit 18 other NHL arenas, and this is the only one that provides live entertainment during each intermission. High quality local bands provide rock and country music from a band stage the juts out over the zamboni tunnel. With a wealth of musical talent in Nashville, this always makes for great entertainment.

Review by Paul Swaney, Stadium Journey Co-Founder

When Assembly Hall opened on the campus of Indiana University in 1971, there were two National Championship banners hanging from the rafters. Since that time, 3 more have been added during the Bob Knight era. The mere presence of 5 National Championship banners makes Assembly Hall a must see for college basketball travelers.

FANFARE Score: 27

Food & Beverage: 3

There is nothing memorable about the food selection inside Assembly Hall, and fans would be better served grabbing a bite to eat either before or after the game. Sodas are sold in large cream and crimson striped cups, an easy souvenir, and something I always appreciate.

Atmosphere: 5

There is no doubt that Assembly Hall is just one of those magical venues that you need to see if you’re a true college basketball fan. The 17,456-seat arena regularly sells out, but the great thing is that it is a very large arena that still feels small. This is mostly because seats are packed high, rather than being in a stretched out bowl format. The bad news is that it means there are some bad seats in the house because of this set up. For my experience, I sat at center court, but all the way to the top (in the “balcony”). This meant that the view of the scoreboard was a far better view of the action than the tiny bodies I could see on the court.

My advice is to make the most of your experience and shell out the extra bucks to get good seats. It is remarkable though that even in down years, the fans come out in droves and the arena is electric when the Hoosiers go on a run. Combine that with the history that seeps into your pores as you enter the building, and you are in for a great fan experience.

Neighborhood: 3

Immediately surrounding the arena there isn’t much of a presence of bars or restaurants, but less than a mile away you can find a few options. In these situations I generally like to avoid the parking lot of park in between the arena and the eating destination of my choice.

For pre or post game, I can definitely recommend Scotty’s Brewhouse. They have a large beer selection including many local brews, and a deep menu, including some delicious ribs. My one complaint is that they were terribly understaffed, and the bartender explained away the lag in service by saying they’re “not usually this busy.” Really? On a game day, you didn’t expect to be busy? Come on. Despite that management flaw, the food and beer menu are redeeming enough to recommend.

Fans: 5

There’s just something special about Indiana basketball. You feel it when you enter the arena, and you definitely notice it when the game begins. At every other Big Ten stadium, there are some (or in some cases many) fans who yell irrational things, and it’s understandable- it’s the subjectivity that accompanies being a fan. However, the Hoosier fans just seem to have a higher basketball IQ. When they yell at a ref it just sounds like truth. That may seem like an overstatement, but truly I did not hear one fan comment that seemed clouded by their loyalty to the Crimson and Cream.

The pep band is also one of the better ensembles in the Big Ten. When they play Indiana, Our Indiana you know you are in a basketball heaven.

Access: 3

There is plenty of parking available both on the street and in the arena parking lot. My recommendation is to park a few blocks away and enjoying walking through the neighborhood. Bathrooms are fine, but if you sit in the upper level, please take my advice and wait for the elevator. Those stairs can be unbearably tough. Patience, as they say, is a virtue.

Return on Investment: 4

I paid $50 on a resale ticket shop for my seat at the very top of Assembly Hall- a pretty steep price for an equally steep view, but I still think it was worth the price to be in that arena. In fact, if I could do it again, I would pay more for a better seat. In my visits to each college basketball arena in the Big Ten however, it was the most expensive seat I had, and probably the second worst view.

Still, a trip to a Top Ten all-time program, even in bad years, is worth that price.

Etc: 4

Extra points awarded for those 5 National Championship banners, for the knowledge of the fans, for the great pep band, and just for being a historic place. You can’t help but picture the famous shot of Bobby Knight tossing a chair across the floor when you stare down at that hardwood.

Final Thoughts:

When I was a kid, I used to videotape college basketball games and re-watch them over and over. One of my favorites was a Michigan/Indiana game where Jay Edwards hits a game winning shot at the buzzer. I loved watching that shot, in part, because of the fan reaction that you pick up from the tv both visually and audibly. I always wanted to experience a game at Assembly Hall, and it certainly didn’t disappoint. Make sure you add this to your to do sports list.
